NZSOLD young professionals group launched
With blue sky, sunshine, an excellent turn out and a trip to dams in the Waitakere Ranges, the
Inaugural event of the NZSOLD Young Professionals Group took place on Friday 20th February.
Hosted by Watercare in Auckland and organised under the enthusiastic leadership of Suzanne
Naylor (Watercare) and Dan Forster (Damwatch), this initial meeting attracted 32 attendees from
all around the country. Fifty people from Dunedin to Whangarei have already signed up for the
group, showing a high level of interest from the younger members of the dams community. This
group is in keeping with the vision of the ICOLD Young Engineers Forum formed in 2011.
Extracts from their Purpose Statement are included below, to introduce you to the concept, why
you might join or how you could help (for those over 40s!):
NZSOLD recognises that an important part of sustaining a healthy professional industry is to
develop its young professionals, as the next generation to support it and lead it. NZSOLD also
recognises that there is a need to specifically target this in our industry. The purpose of the newly
formed NZSOLD Young Professionals Group aligns with this aim.
Vision and Objectives
Vision: “To provide a forum and structured programme, where young dam professionals are linked
to each other, and to experienced industry professionals, for the purpose of technical development,
knowledge sharing and relationship building.”
- network young dam professionals with each other and with experienced industry professionals
- organise technical meetings, presentations and activities for young dam professionals
- integrate young dam professionals into wider NZSOLD activities (and membership)
- link with, and support the NZSOLD Management Committee
- link with ANCOLD and ICOLD young professional groups
The group is for under-40’s and open to all dam industry professionals, e.g. engineers, technicians,
scientists, project managers and managers. Group members are typically NZSOLD members (or
employees of NZSOLD corporate members), however, non-member participation is actively
encouraged (in the hope that participants become NZSOLD members).
NZSOLD Management Committee and experienced industry professionals over 40 will be asked to
participate in specific activities and contribute their knowledge and wisdom
A range of events will be organised throughout the year – potentially 2-3 per year depending on
interest (and organising help). Our vision is for these events to include technical talks, site visits
and social interaction.
Group members are invited to host an event, with the support of their employer and willing dam
owners to host site visits. Members will also be invited to present on interesting topics or projects
they have been involved with, and experienced industry professionals outside of the group will be
invited as guest speakers to share their knowledge (and meet the group).
Support and Sponsorship
Support and sponsorship of the Young Professionals Group activities (either in kind or financially)
will greatly assist the events and opportunities offered. Industry organisations are encouraged to
support the group. Employers of group members may donate time or resources in support of their
employees’ development, and similarly dam owners by hosting an event.
If you are keen to get involved or to host the group, please let us know. We look forward to the
future of the group and an increase in the youthful participation in NZSOLD!
