IPENZ Transaction: Safety valve and burst disk capacity

IPENZ Transactions makes new engineering knowledge available through peer-reviewed papers and project reports.

Sizing calculations for two-phase flow (steam and water) through safety pressure relief valves (PRV) and burst disks are critical for plant safety. There are no universally accepted methods for sizing these devices. This paper provides a comparison between test data collected during the Ohaaki geothermal field commissioning and common valve sizing methods.

Theoretical values of mass flow rate, calculated by HEM/omega method and by the Russell James formula were compared with tested flows and show that the omega method underestimates the mass flow rate in the range of conditions tested while the Russell James formula values are a better match to the test results and the range of conditions encountered in geothermal power plants.
