Engineering Skills: Call for Evidence Review of Tier 2

New Zealand’s engineers are skilled, well-regarded and in demand. Many countries, including New Zealand and the United Kingdom, have skill shortages and compete globally for these skills. This submission from IPENZ and the IPENZ UK Branch to the Migration Advisory Committee responds to a review of the United Kingdom’s Tier 2 route. This route is the primary route through which New Zealand-qualified engineers enter the United Kingdom. In the submission we note the shortfall of engineers will not be satisfied by mobility agreements and education policies alone. Immigration policies are an integral part of the solution and must recognise the implications for the economy, global competition and the time needed to address the skill shortage.
